Despite the rainy season, Selmon Extension crews continue to work on the new bridge drainage system. Water will flow from the top of the bridge down through the segments and directly to the existing storm sewer system. Since the drainage system isn’t completely installed, the contractor innovatively placed basketballs inside the drain inlets on top of the bridge. Crews use the basketballs to temporarily plug the inlets so that heavy rainfall doesn’t dump a lot of water onto the roadway, hitting vehicles as they drive by. They deflate the balls before putting them in the hole so it presses firmly against the concrete. The balls will be removed once the drainage system is complete.
